How to set a sleep timer on Apple TV
Apple TV has two separate settings that put the device to sleep, and it’s easy to mix them up.
Settings → General → Sleep After is an idle timeout: pick 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, or Never, and the Apple TV powers down after that much time with nothing new happening on screen (Apple World Today, tvOS 26).
Control Center also has a Sleep Timer, a separate countdown you set for right now rather than an idle timeout - open Control Center, select the Sleep Timer button, and pick a time range.
Neither one is aware of what’s playing. Apple’s own documentation describes it plainly: “You can set a timer to have Apple TV 4K turn off after a designated period of time” (Apple Support). That’s it - no fade, no pause, no way for an app to extend it or hook into it. If you fall asleep before the timer ends, whatever’s on screen and whatever’s playing just cuts at once, mid-scene.
That’s the real gap. Apple TV has a sleep timer, but not one apps can use - a per-app, content-aware fade has to be built by the app itself. Room for Stars brings its own: pick a scene, set the timer, and the room goes dark on schedule - audio fades, screen off, together, at the time you chose.
